Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
