At least 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
